Building Pipelines, Hugely Lucrative for Iran

TEHRAN (NIORDC) __ A senior Iranian official says construction of every 1,000 kilometer of pipelines for transfer of petroleum products could save the country roughly Rls. 35,000 to 40,000 billion. Alireza Sadiqabadi, the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), said implementation of three pipeline projects of Shazand-Qom-Rey, Nain-Kashan-Rey and Tabriz-Khoy-Urmia would save the country nearly 40,000 billion Iranian rials, adding implementation of these plans was important in terms of corporate economy, national economy and social responsibility.Sadiqabadi added Shazand-Qom-Rey pipeline has a daily transfer capacity of 300,000 barrels and Nain-Kashan-Rey pipeline has a transfer capacity of 200,000 barrels per day. He said if the pipelines were not built and the amounts were to be transferred by tankers, the costs would have been insurmountable. He stated that NIORDC would save Rls. 20,000 billion per year by building the pipelines, noting that each of the pipelines prevented traffic of over 1,500 tankers per year. He said in general, the cost of road transportation per ton-kilometer is Rls. 2,000 and with pipeline transportation, it is Rls. 180 per liter, adding, "Replacing gas oil with natural gas will save about Rls. 6,000 to 6,500 billion for each of the pipelines." "I declare that we were one of the few refiners in the world that did not reduce the refining capacity of the country despite COVID-19 pandemic," he went on to add.
