TEHRAN (NIORDC) __ The CEO of Bandar Abbas Oil Refining Company said the plant has devised plans which will bring its annual propylene output to 12,000 tons.
According to IRNA, Hashem Namvar said: "By implementing a project to improve the quality of heavy products at Bandar Abbas Oil Refining Company, this company will be able to produce 12,000 tons of propylene per year."
Addressing reporters, he said the project was being carried out with focus on the coking unit as one of the important development plans of the company in order to reduce its fuel oil output.
He said the refinery inked a contract for obtaining the technical knowhow and design of a sponge coke unit with the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry in February 2020, with the aim of meeting the needs of the country"s aluminum industry.
Referring to implementation of the project to improve the quality of heavy products according to the schedule, he added the basic design of the process units of this plan are now more than 50% complete.
The CEO of Bandar Abbas Oil Refining Company further stated that production of more valuable petroleum products is one of the advantages of the heavy product quality improvement project, and said: "One of the most important products in this plan is propylene with polymer grade, which will be produced at 12,000 tons per year."
Namvar added: "With the full implementation of the plan to improve the quality of heavy products, Bandar Abbas Refinery will become a petro-refinery and the development of the petro-refining industry will prevent crude sales, economic prosperity, generate more value added and neutralize oil sanctions while improving the economic performance of the refinery."
Propylene is used as a feedstock for production of various polymers and intermediate items. Most of the propylene produced in Iran is converted into polypropylene and part of it to diethyl hexanol.
Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery, as the most modern crude oil refinery and the only heavy crude oil refinery in Iran with a refining capacity of 350,000 barrels per day, currently processes about 18% of Iran"s crude oil and consequently supplies petroleum products that are required by the country. In addition to Hormozgan, products required by 6 provinces, including Sistan and Baluchestan, Kerman, Yazd, Fars, Bushehr and South Khorasan are produced in this refinery.
Liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline, jet fuel (ATK), kerosene, gasoil, and fuel oil are the main items produced at Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery. Moreover, vacuum bottom, vacuum slobs, sulfur, heavy-duty lube-cut, isocycle and 402 solvent are other items produced in the refinery.
At present, the refinery is fed by crude oil from Hengam, Khark, Sarkhoun and Assaluyeh fields.
